Winter is approaching and in some parts of the country, the first snow has already fallen. For homeowners, it’s important to make sure your heat pump is ready for colder temperatures. A well-maintained heat pump not only keeps your home warm but can also save energy and reduce heating costs.
To help you out, we’ve put together some simple tips on how to best look after your air source heat pump or exhaust air heat pump. With the right maintenance, you can ensure that your heat pump works efficiently, even in the coldest winter months.
Air source heat pump: Protect the outdoor part
Air source heat pumps are known for their efficiency in delivering both heat and hot water. As these pumps take heat from the outdoor air, it is particularly important to keep the outdoor unit protected and in good condition.
- Check the outdoor unit regularly – Make sure that leaves, snow or ice do not accumulate around the unit. Blockages can impede airflow and reduce the efficiency of the pump. Also, check that the condensate drain is not blocked. Place the unit on a raised surface to avoid burying it in snowdrifts.
- Adjust settings – When the temperature drops, it can be a good idea to adjust your heat pump settings. Lowering the indoor temperature when you are not at home can help you save energy.
- Antifreeze the system – Check that the pipes to the heat pump outlet have good insulation to prevent pipes and components from freezing and to avoid heat loss.
Exhaust air heat pump: keeping the ventilation system clean
Exhaust air heat pumps recover heat from indoor air and are very efficient in modern, well-insulated houses. To maximise their performance during winter, some preparation can be helpful.
- Check the ventilation system – Make sure that the ventilation ducts are clean and free of blockages. A clean system will allow the heat pump to work more efficiently and reduce energy consumption.
- Change or clean filters – As with air-to-water heat pumps, clean filters are essential for optimal system performance. Check, clean and change the filter regularly (about every 3-6 months) See the video on how to change the filter on a Qvantum QE.
