“I Didn’t Expect to Understand Heat Pumps This Quickly” My Introduction to Ground Source Heat Pumps

When I first joined Qvantum UK, I’ll be honest, I didn’t come from a heating background.
Like a lot of people, I’d heard of heat pumps, but if you’d asked me to explain how a ground source heat pump (GSHP) worked, I probably would’ve given you a very vague answer and hoped for the best.
A few months in, that’s definitely changed.
“So… It Doesn’t Actually Create Heat?”
One of the first things that clicked for me was something surprisingly simple: “A heat pump doesn’t generate heat, it moves it.”
That stuck with me.
Ground source systems take natural heat stored in the ground and upgrade it into something we can use indoors. It’s not about burning fuel. It’s about making use of energy that’s already there. Once I understood that, everything else started to make a lot more sense.
How I Now Explain Ground Source Heat Pumps
If someone asked me now, and they often do, I’d explain it like this:
Pipes are buried underground, either in trenches or boreholes
A fluid circulates and absorbs heat from the ground
The heat pump compresses that heat to raise its temperature
The upgraded heat is then used to warm the home and provide hot water
Simple… in theory anyway.
How Ground Source Heat Pumps Actually Work
Ground source heat pumps use naturally occurring renewable energy stored in the ground to provide heating and hot water for buildings.
The process works through four main stages:
A network of underground pipes, known as a ground loop, absorbs low-grade heat from the surrounding ground
A circulating fluid transfers this energy to the heat pump
Inside the heat pump, a refrigerant and compressor increase the temperature of the captured heat.
The upgraded heat is distributed throughout the building to provide heating and hot water.
Unlike traditional boilers, ground source heat pumps do not generate heat through combustion. Instead, they transfer and upgrade existing renewable energy, making them an efficient low-carbon heating solution.
More Than Just Heating
Another thing I didn’t realise when I first started learning about heat pumps is that they’re not only designed to keep homes warm.
One of the biggest surprises for me was discovering that the Qvantum QG Series can also provide cooling, alongside heating and domestic hot water, from a single integrated system.
Before joining Qvantum, I hadn’t really thought about overheating as a challenge in UK homes. Like many people, I assumed our biggest concern was keeping buildings warm in winter.
The more I’ve learned, the more I’ve realised that modern, well-insulated homes can also become uncomfortably warm during periods of hot weather. Recent UK heatwaves have shown just how important indoor comfort can be throughout the year.
Being able to provide heating, cooling and domestic hot water from one integrated system creates a more comfortable living environment while helping future-proof housing developments.
What I didn’t expect is how steady and reliable the technology can be.
The ground temperature doesn’t fluctuate in the same way outdoor air temperatures do. That means ground source heat pumps can operate using a much more stable heat source throughout the year.
Ground temperatures are influenced by factors such as depth, soil composition, moisture levels and groundwater movement, but generally remain much more consistent than outdoor air temperatures.
For housing providers and developers, this can offer several benefits:
Reliable year-round heating performance
Improved energy efficiency
Lower carbon emissions
Reduced reliance on fossil fuels
Greater long-term energy cost stability
It’s one of the reasons ground source heat pumps are increasingly being considered for residential developments and social housing projects.
“It’s Not Just About the Heat Pump” Something I’ve learned quickly is that heat pumps aren’t simply plug-and-play. “The system design is just as important as the technology.”
Insulation levels, heat emitters, building design and occupancy patterns all play a role in how well a system performs. You can have excellent equipment, but without good design and installation, you won’t get the best results. That’s probably been one of the biggest eye-openers for me.
What Surprised Me Most
Honestly, what surprised me most was how quickly it all started to click.
The more I learned, the more I realised that heat pumps are about much more than technology. They help create comfortable homes, support lower-carbon living and offer a different way of thinking about heating.
And this is only the beginning of my learning journey.
